Her social ascendency is thwarted by suspicion and the fragility of life for the Victorian poor. People around her are dropping like flies, and not all of them due to her arsenic-laced tea. Perversely, it was only when things began to spin out of control for Cotton that the drama started to find its grip on her character....
Dark Matter Season 3 Episode 11 Digging into the vault with a callback to season 2, Dark Matter reminds viewers in “The Dwarf Star Conspiracy” that there is an alien force in the mix, but is it all too much? Steering things away from the corporate war over the past few weeks hasn’t been a bad thing, but there are so many things to focus on that despite the enjoyment of each story — time travel, androids with free will, and now aliens — it’s hard to decide what to pay attention to....
Sort of a fish out of water story, Bless This Mess follows a newlywed couple who give up the hustle, bustle, and expenses of New York City to live a simpler life in Nebraska. Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency Season 2 Episode 9 Being such a huge fan of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency makes it difficult to review an episode like this, which disappointed on some levels but not necessarily in ways that deserve criticism. As the story moves towards a deserved Dirk-centric conclusion, death and destruction litter the field so completely that it makes it difficult to process whether or not a lack of enjoyment comes from a narrative flaw or the overwhelming sense of loss....
Nowadays it can be surprisingly tricky not to know something. Suppose, for example, that your memory surrounding the final scenes of 2013’s The Day Of The Doctor, Doctor Who’s much-lauded fiftieth birthday present to itself, was a little bit hazy. Something about a 3D oil painting and Tom Baker, wasn’t it? Ahem. Things were a lot different forty years ago, back before DVRs or even VHS recorders were a household fixture....
10.8 The Lie Of The Land I’m filing this with ‘episodes I wished I liked more’, I’m afraid. Rounding off what we’re calling – even if nobody else is – the ‘Monk’ trilogy of stories, The Lie Of The Land kicked off promisingly, with flavours of The Last Of The Time Lords and The Stolen Earth. For, just past the half way point of the series, we’ve had the kind of ambitious story that once would have ended a run....
6.6 The Almost People It’s probably best that we start at the end, given that, not for the first time, we’ve had a last few minutes of a Doctor Who episode that puts a whole new complexion on the series as we’ve seen it thus far. Because, going by what that cliffhanger has just told us, we’ve been seeing a fake Amy Pond. And if you start threading back through the series, we’ve had a fake Amy Pond for a good few episodes now....
In the catalogue all personnel at the EIFF get, Captain Abu Raed is noted as being the first Jordanian film in half a century, which is probably why the national flag flies in glorious slow-motion over the end credits. This is no over-patriotic love-in, however: the film follows Abu Raed (Nadim Sawalha), an elderly airport janitor who one day finds a discarded pilot’s cap and begins to wear it to the pleasure of the children in his neighbourhood....
As the series hasn’t yet reached the official pick-up stage, Fuller was able to confirm little on the record aside from the fact that so far, one actor in particular has been approached about a lead role (we’re not allowed to say who but it’s a doozy. Cross fingers and toes that this one comes off). Finally, if American Gods does get the go-ahead, Fuller estimates that we could see it in late 2016… Obviously you’re still in post on Hannibal right now, but can you update us on American Gods?...
3.5 Search and Recover The fifth episode of the season for Falling Skies is one I’ve been waiting for since the events of last week. Basically, this week’s instalment promised a Pope and Mason festival, and do we ever get it. The show’s best actor and best-defined character together for the bulk of an episode? Thank you very much, Falling Skies. It’s strange to see that after all this time, Mason and Pope don’t get along, but it’s nice to see them fighting with one another....
2.1 Monster Fear The Walking Dead started out on fairly good footing last season. Every first season has its ups and downs, but they kicked off with more of an idea of how to do the show, a more consistent creative vision, and a more interesting premise: what would life be like when the zombie apocalypse breaks out? Granted, they didn’t do a lot with the premise on a macro level, but on a micro level—examining it from the point of view of one family in a small community protected by armed guards—it proved to be interesting, and the acting was much improved over The Walking Dead‘s first season....

Episode one saw Banville take on the case of Kevin Russell, an ex school-caretaker who’s spent the last fourteen years inside for the murder of fifteen-year-old schoolgirl Linda Simms. Banville believes Russell didn’t do it, and is raking up all manner of trouble, and making all manner of enemies, in her attempt to prove it. In the first hour, Banville did enough to have Russell’s conviction declared unsafe and him released from prison pending a retrial....
Feud creator Ryan Murphy is one of the most reliable and reliably confusing individuals in the TV industry. There’s no doubt he has both talent and vision. His series Nip/Tuck along with Shawn Ryan’s The Shield helped put FX on the map as a serious destination for dramatic storytellers and outside-the-box thinkers. The debut season of his American Crime Story anthology The People vs. O.J. Simpson was mind-bendingly, transcendently good....
Yes, another forking episode of this forking show. And for those who are sadistic enough to follow it, I’ll warn you from the outset that there are spoilers from here on in! How bad this part is sets the entire tone of the story, which, if you hadn’t guessed, resolves the whole Demetri-must-die and how issue. The way the adults talk to Charlie in this opening scene had me wanting her to become possessed, as in The Exorcist, and then puke on them all....
There’s a certain generation to whom John Travolta can do no wrong. For example, my father, who is a wonderful man, sees John Travolta as a kindred spirit. Maybe it’s Grease, or maybe it’s Welcome Back, Kotter, or maybe it’s Saturday Night Fever. No matter what it might be, he’s a huge Travolta fan. As for me, I come and go on the subject of John Travolta. My dad and I are never going to agree on, say, Pulp Fiction (I loved it, Dad didn’t), but we were both in agreement that From Paris With Love was surprisingly good....
