Sharp Objects Episode 7 It’s not a melodrama or a crime thriller that lies at the heart of Sharp Objects after all. We’ve been walking further and further into the territory of gothic horror. Having said that, the horror didn’t swamp everything with its presence. Within the creepier aspects of this episode, there was the opportunity to find plenty of answers – things that have long eluded us when we all thought we were trying to track down a more traditionally televisual serial killer instead of a woman in white who floated like a spirit or reclined on the veranda with a cocktail....

You either already know the significance of the Reichenbach Falls to Sherlock Holmes or you don’t. If you don’t, then you’ll find out within a few minutes of episode 2.3, and what minutes those are. For anyone who still needs convincing about Martin Freeman’s Watson (and it must be pretty lonely to number amongst them), The Reichenbach Fall shows exactly why Peter Jackson was willing to rearrange production on a very, very expensive film to accommodate Freeman’s schedule, and why Freeman himself was prepared to turn down the most high-profile role of his career to see out a part in a BBC drama....

Thus, the latest speculation surrounding Matthew Modine’s character in the film. Hmmm. Thus far, we know that Tom Hardy as Bane will be a villain in the movie, and your guess is as good as ours as to how Nolan will approach the character of Catwoman. She may be a villain, she may not be. If the character of Nixon does turn out to be the on the side of bad, then at most, we suspect Modine’s involvement will be no bigger than Tom Wilkinson’s in Batman Begins....

Are you sitting down? Chibs fucks the lady Sheriff on the hood of her car, in a parking garage, during the middle of the day, while one of the lesser Sons watches. Not what you were expecting? Not to worry, the episode gets sadder. Actually, this particular encounter is pretty pathetic considering he does it at her request to prove that he has feelings for her. Iew. Now, being the progressive feminist that I am, I know we should not slut shame other ladies who choose to empower their kink....

Starting on the mysterious world of Nimbus III, we meet a Vulcan with a crazy laugh, and the ability to take away peoples pain. Back on Earth Kirk, Spock and McCoy enjoying a holiday at the Yosemite National Park, Scotty is busy trying to get the new Enterprise in working order, while Chekov and Sulu are enjoying a hiking holiday. On the other side of the galaxy, a bored Klingon commander, Klaa, is tired of shooting down old NASA space probes and after hearing the Kirk and the Enterprise are en route to Nimbus, he decides to test himself against Kirk....

2.11 The Protector Of Concord Dawn The Empire is harrassing the Outer Rim more and more, so Sabine suggests the Rebels use an out-of-the-way hyperspace route around Mandalorian colony, Concord Dawn. That requires talking to the factious Mandalorians who live there, whose aggressive response leaves Sabine and Kanan on a mission to either kill their leader, Fenn Rau, or convince him to join the Rebel cause. The central question of the episode is which of those choices will work out better, and putting Kanan and Sabine together allows them to have clear, understandably motivated voices for both of those philosophies....

3.1 & 3.2 Steps Into Shadow Season three begins with a bit of a time jump. Young Jedi Ezra Bridger has grown, and not necessarily for the better. His particularly timed descent toward the dark side was one of the more fascinating things about season two. Raised without the (sometimes corrupt and stifling) influence of the Old Republic Jedi Order, Ezra’s need for justice in his precarious world increasingly manifests as an attraction to power....

And this sugar rush of memories reached its zenith during the Halloween party attended by the show’s one-time power couple, Steve (Joe Keery) and Nancy (Natalia Dyer). The two are adorably dressed as Tom Cruise and Rebecca De Mornay from Risky Business (back when Cruise’s shtick could be considered un-ironically adorable). But other shoutouts include Cobra Kai from The Karate Kid, John Belusi from Animal House, Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman, Rocky Balboa’s training sweats gear, Siouxsie Sioux of the Banshees, and “Billy Jean” era Michael Jackson attire....

9.9 Blood Bonds It’s not dissimilar from Arrow‘s decision to have Quentin arrest Oliver for his alleged vigilante ways surprisingly early in its first season, thus plausibly throwing off suspicion for the character most likely to go on a witch hunt later on. Here, at least, more or less everyone knows the truth, but it would have been nice to leave Cat clued in. Of the people we care about, she’s the last one to know....

Supergirl Season 3 Episode 20 Superficially, Alex’s story this week was about finding and stopping an enemy from her past who threw a bomb at her in a public place while she was with Ruby. But that served as just an entry point for Alex to realistically contemplate what parenthood will look like, given her line of work. Alex’s early attempts were ham-fisted to say the least – shoe-horning that Ada Lovelace reference in between all her declarations of being “chill” was a bit much....

“Ask Jeeves” is a classic whodunnit. The first half was very much like a game of Clue. Dean even picks up a candlestick to use as a weapon at one point. This Clue-like episode was light in tone. It didn’t step its toes into dark territory until much later. Yes, I know there was a body count from the very beginning, but since the writing purposely didn’t get us attached to any of these shallow characters, we didn’t have to care that they died....

11.16 Safe House Having the two investigations is a clever way of bringing back beloved characters, especially Bobby, without having to get too heavy into lore or disturbing the peace we know Bobby has achieved now. We get lots of great little character moments in there; Dean embellishing Bobby’s heroics in the first soul eater hunt because he idolises his pseudo-father whilst Bobby’s telling of it to Rufus is markedly done with less gusto....

You can’t help but feel that this idea of running out of time is coursing through Terror in Resonance as it begins to wrap itself up with only three episodes remaining, and finally, answers to questions begin to trickle out. It’s still a little frustrating that the show, even now, continues with its subdued pace (and this might be more of an issue of them taking last week off, and the last episode being their most exciting entry), and this week a very relaxed pace is found as characters question the roles they’re in....

In this new world order we quickly learn two important things: Fear is a good motivator, but ‘revenge isn’t justice.’ In the wake of Wells’ shocking death, the prisoners have come together to build a protective wall around the camp to keep out the murderous Grounders. That’s the motivation part of that mysterious maxim—unite for the common good. Accusations fly, punches are thrown, and next thing you know, chants of “float him” become a rallying cry....

It doesn’t matter anyway, because your research has been done for you in this book. No fewer than 114 forms of making people go “Ow!” are included, from the rather worrying ‘amputation’ through to the distinctly less-worrying (especially for criminals) ‘zero tolerance’. I lived on the edge of a zero-tolerance area once. It was both punishment and torture. Britain, you see, is too small for it and the rotters just come and smash your windows in instead of somebody else’s....

Not a frame of The Apprentice had been screened this week, and already, I figured Stuart had to go. The minute he even steps onto the boardroom carpet after losing a task, I figure the taxi may as well be called for him there and then. But that wasn’t set to happen this week. Kicking off with a little bit of xenophobia, the posh cars took them to the German embassy....

The Assassination of Gianni Versace Episode 4 Review This week, we continue to work our way backwards through Andrew Cunanan’s killing spree, going to Minneapolis in April of 1997, a week before he killed Lee Miglin. Once again Gianni is absent from the story named for him, though we all know true crime cares more about perpetrators than victims, and so far it has paid off for American Crime Story. Going backwards like this is an interesting choice....
