Nic Pizzolatto, who has written all the episodes since the series began, will make his directorial debut this season. At least one episode will be directed by Jeremy Saulnier, who made 2015 hostage thriller Green Room. While this is nowhere near a guarantee the series will return to its dark spiritual roots, True Detective’s newly announced locale opens possibilities. The show can mine the Ozark mountains for secrets that have been so compulsively hidden, only one book, Vance Randolph’s Ozark Mountain Magic and Folklore, is really recognized as authoritative on the subject....

3.12 Let’s Rock My going theory on Twin Peaks: The Return was that David Lynch alternates between gentle, plot-developing episodes and punishing dives into existential postmodern horror. But Part 12 defecates all over my theory, because I do believe this was the least horrific episode yet. There wasn’t a bit of blood or vomit! That said, it was still punishing, but in a completely different way. A major feature of The Return has been drawn-out scenes of stilted conversations and Part 12 really pushes the viewer’s tolerance on this front....

Part Three Part three begins with an extended sequence of mind fuckery in line with the parts preceding it but, after a long stretch of abstraction, things begin to move a little more quickly as more concrete plot elements fall into place. To comment briefly on that opening sequence, some of it is just gorgeous. The purple environment Cooper drops into at the start is so simple looking yet so effectually otherworldly....

2.2 Serpent’s Tooth It’s an interesting question for a show about space monsters who want to interbreed with us, but fortunately, the latest episode of V, Serpent’s Tooth, also has a massive explosion to make up for all that deep thinking. The Fifth Column is back and active once more. I don’t mean the Fifth Column we know and follow weekly. I mean the other anonymous guys who also make up the anti-V resistance in other places throughout the world....

4.6 What Might Have Been What Might Have Been continued the preparation for the Viking raid on Paris, as the last of the necessary business is concluded in Hedeby and Kattegat, and the Norse men and women take to the sea. The episode begins with Lagertha performing a ritual over the grave of the man she murdered on their wedding day, a ritual reminiscent of the one she performed in Wessex to ensure fertile soils....

Gilligan wrote 30 episodes and executive produced or produced dozens of others. He co-created and executive produced the X-Files spinoff The Lone Gunmen. When the truth was no longer out there, Gilligan moved on in a big way. The critical and commercial success of Breaking Bad and its spinoff Better Call Saul have put Gilligan in an elite level among television auteurs. The man is no small potatoes and thus he has precious little time to revisit the past....

Coming off of the season 6 ending there’s now a huge shift in the status quo. The Paladins need to get back to Earth but it’s not happening right away. They’ve got to find a power source for the Lions and take care of Shiro. Both of these plots make up two strikingly different parts of the episode. The former is a wild fun ride that gives us more of Romelle and even Hunk!...

And it is glorious. Watching the season you can easily separate it into two parts. The first is taking a long deep breath before the marathon. It’s getting focused. Reminding both the characters and the audience what they’ve built over the previous six seasons. Reflecting on how far we’ve come. We’re reminded why we love and want to protect each and every one of these characters while also learning new things about them....

Covering several decades from the late 80s until now, We Steal Secrets aims to trace the history of Julian Assange and the formation of WikiLeaks – from his earliest days as a hacker without a cause in Australia, to its triumph in unleashing the Iraq dossier via the world press, to his current legal difficulties. The film succeeds on many, many levels. Director Alex Gibney has proven before he can tell a compelling story with Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence In The House Of God, and he does so once again here....

The Wii has been out for over a year (with my sister’s fiance getting one back in 2006) so the question I am asking is what’s happening, and why haven’t we been told when stock (at a reasonable price) will appear? Because of the huge desirability of the console, a lot of high street stores cashed in on this limited stock and huge demand problem, and not naming any names (but the companies sound like Blame, and, erm, Blame-Basin) doing some unwelcome things....

We spent a morning at the Adult Swim Games booth at PAX East 2016, where we played many of their upcoming titles. Some of these are old favorites from last year’s show that are headed our way in 2016, while others are brand new surprises waiting to be explored by players who like things that are a bit outside of the box. Here are our thoughts on the seven games we spent time with at PAX:...

The in-ring promo between Lashley, Sami Zayn, and the three male indie wrestlers dressed in women’s clothes that Zayn claimed were Lashley’s “sisters” was so painfully awful, Fox should demand a stop payment on the $1 billion check they issued WWE earlier in the day for television rights of SmackDown Live. Basically, the segment was Zayn interviewing the “sisters” in the ring, and they all talked up how bad Lashley was to them....

Tonight was Z Nation’s third episode, and I think it’s fair to say that by the end of tonight’s installment, I had a sense of what this show looks like and it looks like something I’m interested in watching more of and then some. This is a show that thrives on hope, and that’s what distinguishes it from other contemporary zombie fodder. The jocular tone and slowly (but solidly) developing human relationships have commingled to create an ensemble dynamic that I care about....

Zero Dark Thirty is seen almost exclusively through the eyes of Maya (Jessica Chastain), a young CIA operative who spends more than a decade in the pursuit of the most wanted man in US history. Like Clarice Starling in Silence Of The Lambs, she’s a tough woman in an almost exclusively male line of work; she bears witness to the brutal treatment of suspected al Quaida operatives held in secret bases in the Middle East and Poland, and repeatedly locks horns with bosses over her tenacious desire to locate a man she believes to have direct links to Bin Laden himself....

Then, finally, it clicked. It was Ryan Reynolds. A very young Ryan Reynolds, but Ryan Reynolds nonetheless. Given that both I and my boyfriend are Reynolds fans (ever since Blade Trinity!) we were surprised we hadn’t known he’d ever been in The X-Files. But then, between one thing and another, there are a lot of people we either didn’t know or had forgotten showed up in The X-Files. So here are 10 famous actors whom you either didn’t know, or might have forgotten, were guest stars at one point or another… Seth Green Seth Green played Emil in the second episode of The X-Files, Deep Throat....

Real life has not been kind to season 5 of 30 Rock. First, Tracy Morgan’s kidney transplant threw a diabetes-related spanner in the works. Next, Jane Krakowski reached the trimester of a concealed TV pregnancy, hereafter to be known as the Daphne (so named for an excruciating season of Frasier in which she of the strange vowels was forced to carry a voluminous handbag to obscure her bump in every scene)....

Dual once again threw at us the kind of mindless drivel that has undermined Heroes this season. Apart from plot holes so big you could three-point turn the Titanic in them, the episode once again lacked any real direction as it seemed like Kring was hurrying through the mess of narrative that has been created over the past three months trying to tie up some loose ends and end on some kind of satisfying resolution for the audience....

In the years since, however, this hasn’t been the case. Apart from 2008’s Wanted, Bekmambetov has been remarkably quiet since making the leap onto the international stage. But now, he’s back, with Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, adapted from the Seth Grahame-Smith ‘mash-up’ novel and co-produced by head goth Tim Burton. Curiously, that’s the same creative team behind the quirky dud that was Dark Shadows earlier this year, and while there is a generic gulf between the two films, they are both cut from the same pop-culture-clash cloth....

If you’re wondering if these two things are related, just ask the United States Navy’s Sea Air and Land Teams, aka the Navy SEALs. After all, there’s no team better equipped to take on a host of missions around the world, from observing a drug shipment in Somalia to a raid on a narco terrorism compound in Mexico. They have the skills and equipment, but can they stop Shamal before he and his international band of terrorists bring down the US economy?...

It’s about time that we’ve had a proper evil robot for the boys to square off against. When a highly-evolved android killing machine (guest star Gina Carano) makes her presence known, the police have a bit of a fit: considering that this model was long thought destroyed. As she continues to upgrade herself and procure more technology, we’re introduced to Dr. Nigel Vaughan (John Larroquette) the creator of the DRNs (and thus, Dorian), as well as the rogue ‘bot, who is far more Terminator than Austin Powers fembot....
