Captain Phillips Review

Maybe that’s just me. Under Siege is a particularly fine entry in the Die Hard-in-something-other-than-a-skyscraper oeuvre. Better certainly than both of the Die Hard-in-the-White House wannabees that have come out this year. But part of me thinks I can’t be the only one. Perhaps this is just one of the hurdles facing filmmakers trying to make serious films nowadays. And the types of films Greengrass makes – big, grown-up, challenging, and often costly – would make you think he needs to work within a particular safety zone....

Castle Season 6 Episode 13 Review Limelight

6.13 Limelight It’s been months since we last saw Alexis – ostensibly living in domestic bliss with Pi and thus driving her father a little crazy – far too long to go without her calming and revealing influence on Castle. So it was a little disappointing that we got to see so little of that storyline: there was more screen time dedicated to Pi getting his letter than him getting out of her life....

Castle Season 6 Episode 9 Review Disciple

6.9 Disciple Much like The X-Files, Castle’s equivalent of the freak-of-the-week episodes may be amusing, but the show’s at its very best when dealing with its larger myth arcs. This show has two: the one that focuses on the death of Beckett’s mother and the one about the 3XK serial murderer. Episodes addressing either arc tend to be more serious than the rest and generally allow the main characters to evolve in interesting ways....

Channel Zero Showrunner Nick Antosca Gives A No End House Tour

“No-End House is based on Brian Russell’s creepypasta which is one of the most popular ones,” says Antosca. “There’s fan fiction, sequels, fan-made video games based on it, and ever since we got the show ordered, ‘NoEnd House’ was at the top of my list for stories to adapt.” Russell’s story can still be found online, and it even has further installments to enjoy for those interested in looking at the source material....

Chuck Season 5 Episode 5 Review Chuck Versus The Hack Off

5.5 Chuck Versus The Hack Off Last week left Casey in prison, with the silent understanding that he wouldn’t be there for long. And, unsurprisingly, he was out by the end. But where this story really had issues was in the entirely dumb story where Chuck and Sarah went to a nudist colony, or as this is NBC, went to a pixelation party. Even by Chuck‘s standards this was poor, as I’d at least expected a few visual gags, as in the opening sequence of the second Austin Powers movie....

Clique Episode 4 Review

This review contains spoilers. The episode starts on an unusually sunny note for for our protagonist – new guy, new friends and new life. Everything’s coming up Holly, and Georgia’s absence is making it easier for her to enjoy the various advantages of being one of the elite. But, having seen James Buxton’s body dragged from the river at the end of last week’s episode, we know there’s another shoe ready to drop....

Colin Trevorrow Interview Book Of Henry Jurassic World 2 Star Wars

We spoke to him about his new film Book Of Henry, and what we can expect from him in the future. I think it was, as a parent I couldn’t look away from the ideas that are woven into it. That sense that this child is looking at someone in a tremendous position of power and has that righteous sense of right and wrong, good and evil. Apathy is the worst possible thing and yet deep beneath all of his intelligence is a child and children will often lean into violence as a solution and they’re wrong to do that....

Contraband Review

Then, he got married to the lovely Kate (Kate Beckinsale) and fathered a couple of lovely boys. He’s got a new business, a house on the outskirts of New Orleans, and he’s trying to build a life on the straight and narrow while leaving his criminal days behind him. Then, his wife’s little brother Andy (Caleb Landry Jones) ran into some trouble while making a smuggling run and he had to dump a few hundred thousand dollars’ worth of drugs meant to go to the sketchy-looking Tim Briggs (Giovanni Ribisi)....

Copper Season 2 Episode 10 Review The Fine Ould Irish Gintleman

2.10 The Fine Ould Irish Gintleman Some good news: somebody’s finally doing something about Donovan and his much-hinted-at depravity. Corcoran thinks Donovan is Bartlett’s murderer, and he’s not afraid to confront even Tammany Hall. It’s the age-old “underdog takes on corrupt bigwig” story, and it works here. By this point, viewers are dying for somebody, preferably Corky, to fix the messed-up world they’ve been watching. Donovan makes a great villain, and is more fun to watch than he was early in the season....

Copper Season 2 Episode 2 Review Aileen Aroon

2.2 Aileen Aroon This is the Freemans at their most compelling, and it was long overdue. Their story has always been a point of interest in Copper, but it was somewhat removed from the conflicts faced by the other characters and often sidelined. Now, Sara must face up to her past or risk losing her husband. In the end, the strength we always knew was there shines through. Kudos to Tessa Thompson for bringing such depth of emotion – all without a single word – to Sara when she watched Frederick Douglass speak....

Daredevil Season 2 Episode 7 Viewing Notes Semper Fidelis

Although Daredevil doesn’t lean heavily into the legal drama aspect of its lawyer-as-superhero high-concept, when it does the emphasis is more often on the “drama”. See, for example, the idea that the Punisher could be brought to trial in a week. You’d have to do more than pull strings to get that far in real life. But it doesn’t bother me because what I want to see is the Punisher in the dock, and I don’t care what flimsy explanations they give for why that happened....

Dexter Season 8 Episode 4 Review Scar Tissue

8.4 Scar Tissue This week’s Dexter left me marginally happier than the last one, almost. The improvement almost exclusively revolved around the minor characters, which were more involving, and not just plain annoying. At last Vince gets a real scene, where the revelation of hitting on his own daughter even makes him sit back. I loved this, especially when it transpired that they both shared the same Elmer Fudd laugh....

Dragon Ball Super Episode 34 Review Piccolo Vs Frost Stake It All On The Special Beam Cannon

Dragon Ball Super Episode 34 So much for a kind-hearted Frieza alternate, right? As much as last episode had a lot of fun with the prospect of Universe 6’s Frieza surrogate being his polar opposite, “Piccolo vs Frost” acts as proof that regardless of the universe, regardless of his name, a “Frieza” can’t fight their natural inclination to be an evil, conniving villain. As much as this episode is about Frost’s underhanded tactics in this tournament, the real thing to get excited about this week is that this is essentially one long, awesome Piccolo showcase....

Dynasty Episode 9 Review Rotten Things

Dynast Episode 9 I didn’t think Dynasty could top its Thanksgiving episode, but the show really turned up the heat this week. It seems Dynasty used the first half of the season to put the pieces on the board. The initial mystery of Matthew’s death set up in the pilot was far less engaging than it should have been, but it has since given way to much more fraught dynamics between Blake and Steven, Cristal and just about everyone, and now Jeff and the Carringtons....

Edinburgh International Film Festival Pippa Lee And Hurt Locker Reviews

Well.. The first film that found its way under the spotlight today was The Private Lives Of Pippa Lee, a star-studded melodrama from Rebecca Miller (The Ballad Of Jack And Rose). Elvis Presley The Searcher Review Musical Documentary Sustains A High Note

The three-hour film was directed by Emmy and Grammy award winner Thom Zimny, who does very much the same thing the 1968 special did for Elvis. NBC’s Singer Presents…ELVIS was directed by Steve Binder, who told Presley story by moving through genres. Elvis Presley: The Searcher tells Presley’s artistic story from his early gospel songs, to the blues and country that formed rock and roll, up to his 1976 recording sessions at the Jungle Room in Graceland with an RCA van parked out back with the studio’s entire mobile recording unit inside it....

Episodes Episode 2 Review

As predicted, part two of Episodes is a huge improvement on the slightly awkward opening instalment, and it’s a shame the BBC didn’t show both episodes back to back. In episode two, Sean and Beverly’s anxieties appear, at first, to be unfounded. They meet LeBlanc at a dinner party hosted by Lapidus and are stunned to find that, far from the crass boor they were expecting, the Friends actor is charming and full of enthusiasm for their comedy, and Beverly’s smitten....

Exile Episode 2 Review

Exile is an ambitious drama. Perhaps not in terms of length, setting or budget, but in terms of what it wants to be – a conspiracy thriller that’s both personal and political, about characters and relationships you can really feel. The good thing is that, for the most part, it’s delivering. Yet a change has taken place. Tom has learnt how to care for his father, despite exposing him to perturbing situations and stressful interrogations....
