Haven Countdown Review

I also have to admit that I stopped reading most of Stephen King’s stuff years ago, so I’m out of the loop as far as references to his literature in the show are concerned. At least there’s more King in this series than there was in the entire movie Lawnmower Man. And as far as Lexie is concerned…Nathan wants her to be Audrey, but she’s not. So, her killing her one true love to end the Troubles?...

Haven Speak No Evil Review

We’re only two episodes in and I can’t shake the strong certainty that this is a season about power. Duke and Nathan were joined together to accept the grevous losses they both experienced. When Nathan had to bring Duke the bad news (news that he already knew internally) he risked having the Trouble damage him, so intent was he on helping Duke accept the truth about Jennifer. This wasn’t without a healthy dose of irony given Nathan’s refusal to accept that Audrey, as he knew and loved her, is gone, leaving a destructive monster in her place....

Hell On Wheels Season 5 Episode 8 Review Two Soldiers

Hell on Wheels Season 5 Episode 8 The return of Hell on Wheels, “Two Soldiers,” had shootout at high noon written all over it. The soundtrack and silences during pivotal moments kept the tension and anticipation central to the unfolding story. What happened to Thor over the course of series is subject to debate. Viewers have always known him to be a misguided false prophet, determined to destroy, maim, or kill anyone who got in his way....

Hemlock Grove Hemlock Diego S Policy Player S Dream Book Review

No, I have no idea why this episode is titled that. And exactly one gold star to the first person who can explain it. Hemlock Grove, while occasionally able to execute its Gothic vision perfectly, is more often than not maddeningly inconsistent. The result is that it’s become Netflix’s own Rorschach test of quality for audiences. And “Diego” has plenty of ammunition for both sides of the debate. Miranda says that she is driving through Hemlock Grove from Maine but by “Maine” she must mean “season one” as she is starting to stand out as the most frustratingly dimwitted character on a show filled with recovering dimwits....

Heroes Season 3 Episode 7 Review

To meet those objectives, it helped immensely that early in the proceedings Claire’s brother turned up, and so did Elle, accounting for two of the many ‘missing’. Elle unexpectedly brings with her an interesting problem, which made me actually think showrunner Tim Kring had always planned a plot component that he’s about to hatch. That piece of the puzzle is that all the heroes with synthetic powers have issues with their power, although I’ve not noticed that Nathan has an issue, yet....

How Star Wars The Last Jedi Asks More Of Its Redemption Arc

Who will save Kylo Ren’s soul? With two subversive moments, The Last Jedi reframes the redemption question altogether. If it wasn’t already apparent from the controversial reception The Last Jediis getting, this isn’t your parents’ Star Wars. The Last Jedi is nothing if not a loving criticism of what has come before in the series. Nowhere is this more apparent than in how the newest chapter handles its redemption arc....

Hulk And The Agents Of S M A S H Doorway To Destruction Review

The characters are multi-layered with easy-to-grasp but effective motivations and personalities. The show’s conceit is that it is a pseudo-web documentary, filmed by floating cameras for a web series created by Rick Jones, with action interspersed with Real World style confessional interviews by the cast. It takes some getting used to when Hulk smashing an invading armada from the Negative Zone is cut away from to a first person shot of reality show Hulk....

Human Target Season 2 Episode 6 Review The Other Side Of The Mall

2.6 The Other Side Of The Mall This Christmas-themed episode opened with a family being driven off the road by a 4×4 and a slightly creepy man telling the driver to kill the family. Luckily, the cops show up. Back at the office the family show up asking for help, interrupting a Christmas argument. As the team takes the case, Ilsa tells Chance that she’s going to Uganda for the holiday, thankfully....

Hummingbird Review

Here, he plays damaged goods in the form of Joey Jones, an ex-special forces soldier on the run. So far so routine, perhaps. But once he’s shed a particularly dodgy-looking hairpiece, it turns out that the role fits Statham particularly well. He’s a man living in the criminal underworld of London, but who finds – with the help of a nun (really) – an avenue of sorts for redemption (which turns out to be the title of the film in the US)....

In Darkness Review

When viewed against other movies based on the Holocaust, such as Claude Lanzmann’s sprawling, extraordinary documentary Shoah (1985), Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List (1993) or Roman Polanski’s The Pianist (2002), In Darkness isn’t without flaw. But then again, the story it has to tell is so remarkable that it’s not difficult to see why it gained attention at this year’s Academy Awards. Although Socha’s involvement is purely financial at first – and he certainly makes no secret of his antisemitism – his regular trips to the Jews’ hiding place with food and supplies over a period of months gradually change his sympathies....

Iron Fist Season 2 Episode 6 Review The Dragon Dies At Dawn

Iron Fist Season 2 Episode 6 Wow, I was wrong about last episode being a backdoor pilot for Daughters of the Dragon because this is the backdoor pilot episode, right down to Misty telling Colleen she has good law-enforcement instincts. Misty and Colleen fighting back-to-back was a great action scene, even though I’m not entirely sure how the Crane Sisters turned out to be kung fu experts. Are they in on the K’un-Lun stuff themselves, or just three tattooists who happened to be in the right place to get in on some magical nonsense?...

It S Always Sunny In Philadelphia Season 8 Episode 8 Charlie Rules The World Review

Dee has become addicted to an online role-playing game where she rules over odd, misshapen caricatures of Dennis, Mac and Frank and Charlie. Fed up with being bossed around by the other guys, Charlie decides to help Dee with her role-playing game and eventually becomes hooked, teaming up with Dee to rule the virtual world. In this episode, Charlie takes over, wheeling and dealing his way to the highest ranks of the game and even receiving real-life benefits....

It S Always Sunny In Philadelphia The Gang Squashes Their Beefs Review

I’ll always cherish the videos that went days overdue and the needless late fees I accrued. And how could I forget the countless times I asked my mom for just one piece of Blockbuster’s tasty array of candy only to be rejected? I’m sure that while I’m idly gazing into my Netflix queue I’ll stop and pause to reflect on the empty Blockbuster cases that remained on the shelf, giving me a false hope that the movie I wanted wasn’t already in someone else’s VCR....

It S Always Sunny In Philadelphia Season 13 Episode 1 Review The Gang Makes Paddy S Great Again

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 13 Epiosde 1 Thirteen seasons makes It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia the longest running live-action cable program of all-time. With a lifespan like that, it’s inevitable that the Sunny brain trust of Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day, Kaitlin Olson, and Glenn Howerton would aim to shake-up the status quo to see if new dynamics could bear fresh comedic fruit. Last season ended with Mac fully acknowledging his sexuality, Charlie finally landing the Waitress, and Dennis seemingly departing for North Dakota and a new life as a father....

Izombie Whopper Review

iZombie Season 2, Episode 13 Talk about sticking the landing. iZombie may have just given us its best episode yet with “Whopper,” in no small part because of its third act — full of game-changing reveals (R.I.P., New Hope), crazy Blaine shenanigans, and — of course — the best use of the Les Miserables soundtrack I’ve seen in a long, long time… Thankfully, the recent delving into the backstory of the lackeys of the larger world of zombies and drug trafficking doesn’t stop with Drake....

Jason Statham The Early Years

It took us back to a time when names like Chev Chelios, Frank Martin and Lee Christmas were just twinkles in a screenwriter’s eye. Back to the 90s, when The Stath was merely a diver-turned-male-model, jobbing his way in adverts and music videos. Come with us now on a journey back to The (Very) Early Days Of Jason Statham. 1990 Commonwealth Games Beneath an unusually full head of hair, a sullen and dejected Statham clumsily disappoints for England at the 1990 Commonwealth Games diving competition in Auckland....

Julia S Eyes Review

Now, there is a good reason for this. Aside from the obvious fact that I was a child, I was fairly cowardly and wet. If you haven’t seen Demoliton Man, there’s a scene at the beginning where Snipes’ character is imprisoned and tries to escape. Unfortunately, the only way to get out of the futuristic cell is to use an eye scanner. To bypass the lock, therefore, Snipes takes a warden hostage, gouges his eye out with a pen, and holds the skewered eyeball up to the light, leaving the poor warden writhing, blind and dying....

Justin Kurzel Interview Macbeth Breaking Bad Snowtown

Michael Fassbender stars as the Scottish soldier who wrests the crown from an unsuspecting King Duncan (David Thewlis), while Marion Cotillard plays Macbeth’s scheming wife and partner in crime. Through their superb performances and the way Kurzel captures the very real (and extremely chilly) Scottish backdrop, you can almost feel the blood chill in your bones as Macbeth unfolds. Sometimes Shakespeare films can be a bit cosy, if you know what I mean....

King Arthur Legend Of The Sword Review

Much has been made of that fact that Guy Ritchie has directed and co-written this fresh reboot of the King Arthur legend, with the term “Medieval wide boy” being coined to describe Hunnam’s take on the central character. This isn’t a bad direction to take the character in, although in the case of this film, it does grow a bit tiresome when you’re a good way into the movie and Arthur still doesn’t fancy picking up the eponymous blade and charging into battle....
