Baskets Season 3 Episode 4 Review A Night At The Opera

Baskets Season 3 Episode 4 A plotline that’s been running through all the episodes this season thus far is that Christine’s acquisition of the rodeo is causing her to lose her friends. I’ve not been terribly invested in this plot, probably in part because an old lady bridge club friend group is so far removed from my own experience I can’t find much to relate to. Also, Christine’s friends are catty jerks....

Battlestar Galactica Season 4 Episode 1 Review He That Believeth In Me

Anyway, on to the action: the main plot of this episode is Kara Thrace’s return. She was last seen on a suicidal dive into a big swirly thing with an expression on her face not unlike a recently converted Moonie. Now she’s back, and claims to have found Earth: ‘big blue oceans, fluffy white clouds… you’re going to love it!’ Luckily, no one’s told her about egg ‘n’ ham slabs, Dream Team or Cliff Richard’s 1981 hit ‘Wired for Sound’....

Before Midnight Review

With that said, there’s little point even trying to pretend that I didn’t go into Before Midnight yearning, aching for it to be brilliant. Richard Linklater’s previous two films in the series, Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, are both flat-out five star pieces of cinema for me. As someone usually averse to the overly romantic or love stories, I was utterly swept up in the initial burgeoning relationship between Ethan Hawke’s Jesse and Julie Delpy’s Celine, a screen couple who felt real, and felt like grown-ups....

Being Human Series 3 Episode 4 Review The Pack

3.4 The Pack Not that he wants to. The very idea of werewolves hanging out with vampires clearly sickens him, and it threatened to spill over into what would have proven to be a quick and speedy end for Mitchell, with McNair having been presumed as the wolf-shaped bullet Lia prophesied. While that never materialised, the threat still loomed large over Mitchell as the episode came to a close, as a few chilling words from McNair would prove the greasy sharp-toothed fella’s worst nightmare....

Breathe Review

Based on the true story of Cavendish’s parents, we meet 28-year-old Robin Cavendish (Andrew Garfield) as he meets and courts Diana Blacker (Claire Foy.) They marry and move to Kenya soon after and anticipate a lifetime of adventure ahead of them, that is, until Robin falls ill. Polio leaves him paralysed from the neck down, and his doctors (led by Jonathan Hyde doing his Jonathan Hyde thing) tell him that he has only months to live....

Caf Society Review

His breakthrough hits of the last decade, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Midnight In Paris and Blue Jasmine, are elevated into the former category, but most everything else seems to get dismissed as a cinematic fixture. If you’ve been a fan or viewer for any length of time, it’s a bit like going to the same barber, getting the same annual haircut and hearing the same stories about the same preoccupations and neuroses....

Castle Season 7 Episode 8 Review Kill Switch

7.8 Kill Switch Kill Switch, on the other hand, does neither. The episode starts out promisingly enough as when the murder of Paul Reeves, a GAO investigator, in the park leads to an Occupy-style economic activist. Esposito and Ryan are on his trail until he takes to the subway and Javi has to follow him on foot (we know things are going to go wrong when the boys are split up)....

Channel 4 Comedy Lab Hung Out Review

The basic premise of the show, the latest one-off commission as part of the Comedy Lab programme, is that James and Dave live in one flat in Hung Out, and the other two main characters, Alex and Lucy, live in the other. The four kick off by planning a dinner party in a slightly clunky scene with some equally clunky dialogue. But Hung Out overcomes this, and while it has a rough and ready feel to it, it does begin to hit its stride soon after....

Chuck Season 2 Episode 5 Review

Things could be bad for Jeff and others at Buy More when the company unleashes an efficiency expert on them, ready to ‘trim the fat’ from this particular retail body. It turns out that Missile Command designer Morimoto has secretly hidden a code on the last level of the game that gives access to a real missile defence system orbiting the world, and only one man can get that code for them!...

Chuck Season 4 Episode 1 Review Chuck Versus The Anniversary

Not to take anything away from the people behind this show, but there is something wonderful about its ability to do so much more than the description on the box might suggest. When it began, I think most people thought it might run for one or two seasons tops, but now we’re knocking on season 4, unbelievably. I could analyse why to bits, but the truth is that this show has heart and a production team who care about their product, and that’s written in six foot high neon....

Chuck Season 4 Episode 23 Review Chuck Versus The Last Details

4.23 Chuck Versus The Last Details Penultimate episodes are often rather good, sometimes promising a finale that the show can’t possibly deliver. This one was a little ‘lite’ for me, as it didn’t really build any tension until the final scene, but they managed to work some solid humour around the forthcoming nuptials, and the change in family dynamic that it will signify. The power play between Sarah and Mary was possibly the least engaging part of this story, although it was necessary to bring Vivian back into the story, so it wasn’t all bad news....

Constantine Danse Vaudou Review

Played by Emmett J Scanlan (In the Flesh), this version of Jim Corrigan did not go full Spectre (you never go full Spectre) as of yet, but his fate is foreshadowed through one of Zed’s visions. I think that through Corrigan, we have now seen the potential of Constantine as a series that has one foot in the DC Universe and one foot in the roots of Vertigo, so there are really tons of potential stories that the series can draw from without ever pigeon-holing itself into one genre....

Crossbones The Return Review

And a flash forward of Lowe running from the British, carrying something. But I’m more in charity with Crossbones this week. It gets underway with a lovely conversation in which Lowe tries to convince Blackbeard to let the physician drill a hole in his head. Lowe wants to go to Jamaica, and Blackbeard needs that like he needs…another hole in his head. Lowe’s theory (assumed mostly to get him to Jamaica) that Blackbeard has pressure on his brain is in perfect keeping with the medicine of the time....

Da Vinci S Demons Season 1 Finale Review The Lovers

1.8 The Lovers That said, not all is bad in this week’s episode. As the big season finale, it’s a pretty fast-paced episode that features some very interesting action set pieces. Given that we know there’s a conspiracy in the works with Rome finding an alliance both with Urbino and with the blood enemy of the Medicis, Francesco Pazzi, it’s not a huge surprise that this particular situation would be the center of the season finale even though they only set up the conspiracy in the previous episode....

Da Vinci S Demons Season 2 Episode 1 Review The Blood Of Man

2.1 The Blood Of Man Of course, we can’t jump right into finishing off the Pazzi rebellion. This is the season of the show-opening flash-forward, so like Hannibal, Da Vinci’s Demons kicks the episode off with a tantalizing glimpse of the show’s future in South America, then we jump right back into the mad craziness of Florence, which is in the throes of a pretty fierce uprising. On one side, you have the Medicis and their loyalists, and on the other hand, you have the Pazzi Conspiracy, the waiting troops of Duke Frederico of Urbino just outside the gates, and the power of the Papacy itself....

Damnation Episode 4 Review The Emperor Of Ice Cream

Damnation Episode 4 Did the sparse landscapes, religion and faith in God in 1930s America make people more trusting of each other and susceptible to banks and corporate sharks? I’d venture yes, and unfortunately, too many in the general population haven’t made much progress since. Then and now, self-proclaimed God-fearing folks are easily agitated. One too many people still need a shepherd to tell them what to think, say, and do almost daily....

Dark Matter Stuff To Steal People To Kill Review

Dark Matter Season 2, Episode 8 Dark Matter is back in its groove as the payoffs from earlier episodes come about in a satisfying, logical, and well-paced manner. Introducing a parallel universe can be a dangerous prospect, either by being overly cheesy with the doppelgängers or by over-simplifying the differences between the two worlds. In this case, the return of former colleagues, Wexler and Tash, as well as the skillful manipulation of the twin advantage (both with Four posing as emperor and Two and Three passing as the other Portia and Marcus) kept this story believable and entertaining....

Dark Matter Season 1 Dvd Review

Featuring elements familiar to anyone versed in Star Trek, Firefly, Blake’s 7 or even Guardians Of The Galaxy – Dark Matter smartly mixes the traditional trappings of space adventure (emotionless android, ragtag crew) with the modern storytelling techniques employed in today’s best drama shows. So while remaining reassuring familiar, Dark Matter can suddenly switch gear unlike any other ship-based show before it, and has emerged as a breath of fresh air in today’s superhero laden landscape....

Date Night Review

Like a lot of otherwise happily married couples, they’re stuck in a routine. When their friends announce they’re going to get a divorce, Phil and Claire have the bright idea to shake up their routine, and Phil has a plan: drive into the city (Manhattan) and eat at a trendy New York restaurant. Date Night is, on the surface, a fairly standard comedy of errors. You’ve seen the mistaken identity-gets-someone-in-trouble-with-the-mob/the-law a million times before....
