Flashforward Episode 22 Series Finale Review

Six months ago the whole world stopped for 2 minutes and 17 seconds, the whole world saw the future, but nobody realised what a complete turkey this TV show would turn out to be. Now we reach the final chapter where the characters actually get to meet their predefined futures, even if a good number of these have already been eliminated by anti-destiny events. It all starts by, in quick succession, visiting all the running plot threads, some of which are possibly heading in the wrong direction and others more on course....

Fringe Cuts Popcorn Comedy Interview

We had a chat with acclaimed comic, TNT Show host and occasional CBBC presenter, Holly Walsh, one of the founders of Popcorn Comedy, about the night and their plans for The Fringe. Good, thank you! So, could you tell me more about Popcorn Comedy? So, we wanted to make a night where we could showcase the best funny films on the Internet, where people making funny films could come to see how their films work in front of a live audience....

Fringe Season 4 Episode 4 Review Subject 9

4.4 Subject 9 The reason I didn’t care for it was that the title of the piece, Subject 9, was effectively a huge red herring, as was pretty much the first half of the story. Olivia is attacked by a strange blue form of energy that reminds Walter of a child in his Cortexiphan-injecting project, and they go to hunt the mysterious and powerful Subject 9. This turned out to be an excuse for yet another guilt trip for Walter, ground that I think has been pretty extensively covered in the past three seasons....

From Here To There Episode 2 Review

After an uneasy start, the BBC’s latest drama output, From There To Here manages to find its feet early on in this second episode. Starting off more or less where the first finished, From There To Here surreptitiously sidesteps explaining how Daniel survived the explosion in his brother, Robbo’s nightclub (this reviewer was surprised not to find, in Sherlock fashion, a series of humorous, alternative accounts of how Daniel pulled through) and put more focus on Daniel’s double life....

Game Of Thrones Season 2 Episode 8 Review The Prince Of Winterfell

2.8 The Prince of Winterfell When dealing with the Game of Thrones, not every week can feature dramatic turns of events. Sometimes, to properly build up to the end of a season, you have to spend an hour getting all the pieces into position. This week’s episode was a set-up to a bigger blow-up down the road (specifically, the upcoming battle scene they’ve been hinting at all season as Stannis’ troops head towards King’s Landing, the Lannisters head towards a clash with Robb Stark, some other Northerners head into a clash with the Iron Islanders at Winterfell, and the wildlings perhaps head for a clash with the Night’s Watch?...

Game Of Thrones Season 2 Episode 9 Review Blackwater

2.9 Blackwater Now THAT was an episode! All season, HBO and Game of Thrones has been building up to the first of two big battle blow-offs. The one most promising, the raid on King’s Landing by pretender to the throne Stannis Baratheon, was the subject of this week’s episode, and I have to confess that it lived up to all the budget-straining promises we’ve been getting all along. HBO has a history of, in other programmes, promising big battles but delivering sub-par results....

Game Of Thrones Season 5 Blu Ray Review

Ambitious is a great catch-all phrase to describe Game Of Thrones, and the features on this particular season’s home video release go into great detail about just how hard it is to make a show of this magnitude work with a variety of fun behind-the-scenes features. There are a lot of angles to approach the show from, and the special features provide a lot of opportunities to learn just how much effort goes into creating it....

Geeks Vs Loneliness What It S Actually Like To Get Help

This week, one of Den Of Geek’s regular contributors, Caroline Preece, is taking over. She asked if she could pen a piece for Geeks Vs Loneliness that talks about what it’s actually like to get help. We talk a lot about reaching out and asking for it, but she wanted to put across what it’s actually like when you do so. Without further ado, over the to the brilliant Caroline… There’s a lot of wonderful information online, and advice for those looking for it, but I’ve not found many candid accounts of what it’s actually like to deal with mental health problems from those who’ve actually gone through it....

Girls Trip Review

First, there’s our central group who initially seem to tick all the boxes of archetypal figures in ‘wild-night-out’ comedies. At the centre we’ve got Ryan (Regina Hall), a woman who seems to have it all. Then there’s her friendly foil Sasha (Queen Latifah) who has a secret. Then Lisa (Jada Pinkett Smith), the parent who’s become a bit stuck in her ways. Then finally there’s Dina (Tiffany Haddish), the wild card....

Gotham Pilot Review Spoiler Free

I will get this out of the way right up front so that there is no confusion. If you’ve read my TV ramblings in the past, you may already know where this is going. You can’t (with rare exceptions) judge a TV show by its pilot. There’s too much heavy-lifting that has to be done. If the show is particularly high concept (as Gotham is), there’s an even steeper hill to climb....

Grimm Season 5 Episode 4 Review Maiden Quest

5.4 Maiden Quest This tried-and-test formula can be an interesting hook, if handled well. But this week’s plot involving mobsters, revenge and trials for a fair maiden’s hand was just a little underwhelming on all fronts. The two-bit gangster at the heart of the story was a walking cliché (anyone else expecting him to tell one of his goons to ‘fuhgeddaboudit’?), the identity of the killer was obvious from the opening minutes, the revenge angle turned out to be tenuous, and, frankly, we weren’t seeing anything new about which to get excited....

Grimm Season 6 Episode 12 Review Zerst Rer Shrugged

Grimm Season 6 Episode 12 The next to last chapter of Grimm felt like a bait and switch. At the tail end of season five, Eve was more powerful than what viewers have come to know as Diana’s powers at the start of season six. Nick developed a moderately strong sense of hearing, coupled with the protective stick that also resurrected fallen team members. Diana had previously killed two people who she felt got in the way of her idealistic fantasy of Adeline and Renard as happily married....

Hannibal Su Zakana Review

Now that Chilton has been offered as a sacrificial lamb, er scape goat, Hannibal is no longer suspected to be the Chesapeake Ripper. Not officially. Which means that he, Graham, and Crawford have all decided to play nice. Emphasis on the word ‘play’. Each character has a purpose, a motivation that must be buried behind the role he is forced to play when interacting with the other characters. One machination layered on top of the next, like a set of Matryoshka (Russian nesting) dolls....

Hannibal Episode 1 Review Aperitif

1.1 Aperitif It would be hard for the series to ask for a better pedigree. The story of Hannibal Lecter was first laid out in the novels of Thomas Harris, whose chilling work, lauded by the likes of Stephen King and Roald Dahl, has already covered a large swath of the deadly and cannibalistic career of the psychotic psychiatrist. Each of Harris’ novels was then adapted for the silver screen with three of the five films doing very well in different respects: The Silence Of The Lambs took home the top five Oscars, Manhunter has been deemed in retrospect a stylish 80s classic, and Hannibal has to date made almost half a billion dollars....

Hannibal Episode 6 Review Entree

1.6 Entree So I’m not exactly sure what to make of this week’s episode of Hannibal, Entrée. Thus far, the show has done an excellent job of keeping us guessing. We know Hannibal will turn out bad, so the question instead becomes: how and when (and maybe why) does this happen? And perhaps, has it already occurred? The lushly filmed scenes in the doctor’s dining room have constantly teased us, by juxtaposing the meals with other events, that it is entirely possible that Hannibal has gone bad (if indeed, he was ever good) and has been serving his teammates specially selected cuts of various players in this narrative....

Home Again Review

What she doesn’t get credit for is how they’re rom-coms for grown-ups too, with characters who have actually made it past 40 years of age without succumbing to a strange Hollywood-esque belated Logan’s Run effect. Problems may not always be the ones us paupers face, but at least it’s human beings of some seniority battling them. That’s no bad thing, either. In under 100 minutes, Meyers-Shyer fashions an amiable, enjoyable film, that entertains in spite of its set-up not making too much sense....

How 90S Video Game Ads Tried To Disguise Kirby S Cuteness

Kirby’s games are more niche than say, Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog, but they’ve survived largely thanks to their charm and sheer creativity. The games’ simple platform action is enlivened by Kirby’s copy ability – which means he can steal the attack moves of his enemies – and their reliably off-kilter design. Kirby’s Epic Yarn on the Wii had stages where Kirby could turn into a tank or a space ship, briefly turning the game into a 2D shooter....

Howard The Duck Deserves Another Chance

Except as we know, that didn’t happen. Not only did Howard the Duck fail, it failed huge. So much so that it’s thudding at the box office reverberated all the way to the top of distributor Universal — resulting in studio exec Frank Price departing his job. Throughout the summer of 1986, and until Howard’s glorious return in Guardians of the Galaxy — any mention of the movie resulted in dismissive chuckles and/or derision, often by people who never actually saw the flick but realized that invoking its name was a quick and easy way to get a laugh....

Iron Man Demon In A Bottle

You can see why your average comic reader would identify with a character like Peter Parker or want to be Wolverine, but take away the Iron Man suit and what have you got? Who would want to be Tony Stark? And while it might not deal with the consequences of addiction in the same powerful ways as films like French Connection 2 – this is a comic, after all – having re-read the tale almost 20 years on, it holds up amazingly well....

Jack Kirby S In The Days Of The Mob

In that first In the Days of the Mob issue, its cover cluttered with a Kirby sepia photo montage and small illustrations reminiscent of pulpy, old-timey scandal mags, Kirby introduced Warden Fry, a sinister, supernatural warden in a hell-jail, who acted as host to the stories. Kirby told tales of Ma Barker and her sons, Al Capone vs. Thomas Dewey, the Kansas City Massacre featuring Pretty Boy Floyd, and Alvin Karpis a....
